Fixfox

A cutesy little game about a fox who tinkers with old tech and is sent on a mission to fix up a signal tower at the edge of the galaxy.

I must preface, this is a visual novel with some light puzzling and many fetch quests, and a compelling yet esoteric story to help tug you along. The middle third may seem a little repetitive, but it’s not all that bad and the ending absolutely makes it worth it.

You play as Vix, the titular Fix Fox, part of the SPACR program, exploring space and maintaining infrastructure. Buuuut you’re kinda bad at your job, you kinda just tinker with old tech instead of learning the current stuff. Thankfully there is a signal tower a few centuries old that nobody else on the team knows anything about, except for you, that kind of tech screams out to your interest, so you strap into your cryopod and hop through the warp gate.

So now you’re on planet Karamel, and you now have two very simple tasks: Repair the signal tower, and then get home. Of course it’s not that simple, some nerds stole your tools, so how are you meant to fix anything. Better start digging around for coins, plasters, brushes, and anything else you can get your paws on that could help facilitate your repair jobs, and allow you to explore the area you’re in and the wider planet.

But mystery is unfolding, What’s that shuttle? Who are these nerds? What’s going on here? This was meant to be an empty planet with a signal tower on it in need of repairs, why is this place full of robots and buildings and settlements?

This game is sorta primitive design wise, and the game’s creator is unashamedly furry, the entire world takes place in a post global cooling earth where everyone has been spliced with mammal DNA to have fur to keep warm. There are no unspliced humans left, and you bet this is going to be something the game explores. I’m glad they managed to pull it off without letting it become overbearing though, ultimately the story is about a fox and their backpack, their AI friends, and Planet Karamel. Very much a fan of the music too. It all gives vibes of space western, and I really do enjoy it.
