Still here? Okay.
Outer Wilds is an exploration adventure game where the only unlock is knowledge, and therefore the less you know about it going in, the better an experience you’ll have with the game. Thats why my preliminary review is more or less just “stop reading, and go play it now.”
It’s difficult to talk about this game in a way that isn’t just singing its praises, as every little detail that you learn outside of the game is one less detail you can organically discover within the game, but I guess the more obvious stuff might suffice.
You play as a new astronaut to a species inhabiting a tiny li’l terran planet in a toybox sized solar system, which you can explore at your own pace and in whatever order you’d like by flying around in your sturdy but rickety looking spaceship. The village you start in gives you a bunch of information about the tools and gadgets you have at your disposal, what they do and how to use them, as well as learning a few things about what you’ll encounter throughout the solar system. And to sweeten the deal, you’ve got a brand new toy that can translate the alien text you find in the system. This is the first time anyone has been out exploring with it, so it’s not just new knowledge for you but for your entire species!
If you’re worried this all sounds very aimless, don’t be. The game subtly guides you with mysteries and questions that you’ll naturally want to go find the answers to, and the ship has a computer on it that shows you everything you’ve discovered while you’re playing.
Hopefully thats given you enough curiosity to pick this game up and give it a go.
