Ori And The Blind Forest

Ori is an interersting one, unlike most other games in the genre, it’s a metroidvania that isn’t focused on combat, but rather a lot of tricky platforming through difficult terrain and spiked tunnels. There are some enemies that get in your way, but in general the way to tackle them is to just dodge their attacks and mash the shoot button to let your wisp do the targeting.

The game isn’t without its flaws, the cutscenes being unskippable is a gripe I know a lot of people have on replays (some of them run in the region of 3-5 minutes long,) but other than that, I really did enjoy my time with this game, to the point where I did do most of the challenge run achievements (deathless still evades me though, best I got was 3 deaths.) And don’t be afraid of death, you can drop down save points wherever you want as long as you have a unit of energy to do so.

Ori and the Blind Forest, unlike it’s sequel Will of the Wisps, doesn’t have traditional boss fights. At the end of each dungeon is an escape sequence, a stunningly beautiful setpiece that coexists with the incredibly powerful live orchestral soundtrack that runs alongside the entire game.

Definitely worth a play even if only once. I know some people who have played this game a thousand times, I know some people who couldn’t stomach going for any of the challenge runs after completing it for the first time, but even that first experience is worth every penny.
