So yeah, very early on, you learn this game’s deal, you play as an amnesiac stuck in a time loop. You don’t know how long you’ve been here, what happened in the previous loops, if there even were any previous loops, or what you did in the before time. Don’t worry though, as you play, the voice in your ear Juliana will help uh,,, gently jog your memory, lets say. Sometimes with a gun, so thats fun.
So yeah, after you learn what’s going on, you’ll encounter a cork board with pictures and red string, telling you exactly who the 8 people you need to track down are, and what each one’s deal is like, but as you play you’ll learn more about them. Their habbits, their abilities, how to manipulate them in the loop.
I saw two videos talking about this game before picking it up from Humble Choice a couple of months ago: Jacob Geller’s Time Loop Nihilism, and GMTK’s Wait, Didn’t Arkane Already Make Deathloop? The former is a breakdown of time loop games in general and what it means to master the loop, both for you as a player, and for the people who are part of the loop in the world. The latter is a criticism about some of the design choices in Deathloop, as well as a comparison to Prey Mooncrash, which is almost a case of the same game in a different setting.
Of course one of the gripes brought up in Brown’s video is the idea of the game’s “infusion” system, which I honestly didn’t have an issue with. Deathloop is a game about gathering information in order to execute the perfect plan, and the scope of the game is so large as to make it very difficult to keep track of things like weapon locations, so forcing you to route in collecting weapons or equipment as well as managing all the other systems going on in the game would be a little bit too overwhelming.
